SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT THE EU

Does an economic trading community need a pan-European police force and army? The EU now has all of the above: the European Gendarmerie Force (or EUROGENDFOR, est. 2006) and Europol (est. 1999), Eurocorps (est. 1995) and Eurojust (given expanded powers by the European Commission in 2007, including automatic access to national databases, terrorist cases, and criminal, DNA and prison records, “ensuring states co-operate with Eurojust”.

Why would it need a border and immigration policy? It has one: the Schengen Agreement, which allows for free, uncontrolled migration between member states.

Why would it need a defence policy? It has one: the European Security and Defence Policy.

• Why would it propose to draft a document labeled as a Constitution?

• Why would a trade relationship have codes of Citizenship?

Why would a trading arrangement need a national anthem ("Ode to Joy"), or a flag?

It wouldn’t, because all of these are attributes not of a trading arrangement, but of a STATE.
